The main aim of the program is detailing and texturing the object already shaped in other 3D-packet. You work on detailing level equal to 3 to 5 millions of polygons. Operating speed of editing and viewing objects has grown bigger because of using a map of normals instead of geometrical splitting.

It is well-known that it is easy to shape the object...it takes several hours. But detailing and texturing is long process taking 3 to 10 times more time then modeling a draft itself. 3D-Coat is made to make this part of technological process faster. 3D-Coat includes features for sculptural modeling making the change of shape possible.

Brushes and other Sculpting improvements:
  • CreaseClay completely changed. Now depth defined by depth slider and strength determined by slider. Each has pressure curve. Adaptive details algorithm specially adopted to procuce cleanest result with CreaseClay.
  • LiveClay-like brushes are well compatible now with boolean operations - no explosions/spikes/stretched triangles on edges, no broken edges outside of pen influence.
  • More convenient placing for primitives - "Place on pen" options and sub-options, see primitives tool.
  • Many surface brushes got 2 new parameters - Normals sampling and Buildup. It is very important for convenient and predictable sculpting.
  • Primitives/Models may perform intersection or splitting of objects in scene.
  • Primitives functionality and UI improved, now you may choose boolean operation type
  • Lute brush
  • Now every tool in voxel room may be duplicated or hidden via RMB. It allows to replace and customize existing tools.
  • Loop subdivision tool implemented in surface tools. It is just regular mesh subdivision, very helpful for accurate detailing.
  • Surface mode brushes tuned a lot to produce good and predictable result. Especially that ones: Draw, Clay, Flatten, Chiesel, Rapid, Rapid2, Claws, Claws2, Mud, Mud2, LC.
  • Pinch improved a lot - now it applies displacement + more accurate + separate pressure curves for depth and pinch.
  • VoxLayer got Round profile for edges as an option.
  • Close holes works much more accurate and closes holes with very smooth patch.
  • Splines improved - loading splines dialog got major improvement, now it is possible to place splines in space and import them as 3D shapes.
  • Better algorithm for FFD pose deformations.
  • Airbrush-like tools will work even if you paint one dot with them. It improves painting precision in general.
  • FlattenClay got to well working state. Indent and regular smoothing introduced. Now it may be really useful and powerful brush.
  • General Brush got a lot of refinements, some sub-brushes were not working at all, now everything works nicely. Regular (non tangent) smoothing introduced there as well.
Other improvements and tweaks:
  • Important! Baking settings improved a lot to get full control over the baking
  • It allows to set different scan depth for different areas of the mesh.
  • Baking will take into account externally loaded normalmap.
  • Cloth relax in Retopo room to make all islands edges to be nicely corresponding to each other, important to decrease square/length trash to very minimal degree.
  • Retopo groups may be treated as Objects, not as Materials (as before, but you may switch to old style in preferences).
  • Tiled voxel space introduced to produce tiled textures in voxel room. It is easy to export result via File->Export->Export depth along Y. See wizard in Start menu->Surface mode
  • File->Export->Export depth along Y may be useful to produce textures, masks and alphas too.
  • Export vector displacement accessible after baking as well.
  • Major scripting update, see manual (parametric dialogs, script - controlled strokes, retopo layers management, several examples).
  • Clear all layers button in layers panel.
  • Freeze->Hide frozen areas.
  • VRML2 export/import for better compatibility with 3D-printers.
  • If ptex scene has multiple objects, it is now possible to export ptx files separately, one ptx file per object. Colored specular/emissive export for ptex done too.
  • Top panel optimized for lower resolution, it may work correctly on 1280x... screen.
  • Artman's preset included by default. It overwrites existing artman tools once after installing.
  • Baking is more clean now, especially on thin surfaces and hard surface geometry and on seams.
  • Artman's presets updated.
  • Sticky keys implemented.
  • PSD files may be exported from File->Export dialog as one of textures type. Also if obj/lwo/fbx files refer PSD file, it will be imported correctly as well. It is especially important for AppLinks.
  • Splines improved - loading splines dialog got major improvement, now it is possible to place splines in space and import them as 3D shapes.
  • Export big mesh from MV/PTEX as STL allowed for 3D printing.
  • Font updated to include all Unicode characters.
  • Wireframe in Edit all layers via PSD.
  • Scripting got major update. Look documentation. Generally it allows to do non-destructive modeling with primitives. It is good to create parametric hardsurface stuff. Scripts may be inserted in any top menu section. Paint layers management via script. Extended control over voxel scene.
  • General cleanup and Mantis issues fixes.
